Changes to the Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) initiative

February 4, 2020

The Australian Government’s CGM initiative delivered through the National Diabetes Service Scheme (NDSS) supplies CGM through a variety of products for certain sections of the Diabetes population, fully subsidized (no patient co-payment). This initiative is changing from March 1st, 2020 in some important ways for patients who qualify. These patients are:

  • type 1 diabetics under 21 years of age
  • subjects with diabetes, requiring insulin, similar to type 1 diabetes under 21: this includes Cystic Fibrosis-related diabetes and neonatal diabetes
  • women with type 1 diabetes who are pregnant, planning pregnancy or immediately post-pregnancy
  • type 1 diabetics 21 years or older who have concessional status (health care card, seniors health care card, pensioner concession card) This last category has changed and it is no longer necessary to show ambulance attendance or presentation to hospital for a severe hypoglycaemic event.

The initiative has also changed to include the Freestyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring System. The full list of CGM products included can be found here.
